President Obama lifts a Vietnam arms ban that prevented trading of weapons between the U.S and Vietnam. The embargo was established after the Cold War and greatly reduced Vietnam’s ability to defend themselves from foreign threats. The lifting also can be seen as an effort to prevent China’s influence in Asia from growing to rapidly. There is constant territorial disputes in Asia, if Vietnam can defend themselves this can lead to land reclamation. China, however remains under a strict weapons embargo with the U.S and other European Nations. President Obama doesn’t believe the removing the ban will immediately cause a rise in arms trading, but does believe it is an unjust ban resulting from “ideological” differences.
